Practically no other materials have as much recycling potential as thermoplastics. Companies who place plastic products like these on the market therefore have a particular responsibility to keep plastics in the recycling loop.
Compared to non-returnable PET and returnable glass bottles, returnable PET bottles have the best ecobalance in regional sales as they are low in weight and can be refilled. However, owing to flavor migration from the product to the PET wall and vice versa, for some beverages the number of bottle refilling cycles is limited.
To date, multiple filling has also restricted the sensory and optical life of filled returnable PET products. In an attempt to master this challenge together, KHS and a team from special research division SFB-TR 87 at RWTH Aachen University and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) have joined forces.
Research has been performed on plasma barrier protection systems for plastics at special research division SFB-TR 87 at RWTH Aachen University and at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) since 2010.
