Returnable PET Forum

Forum

Date: 15 October 2019

Providing you with exclusive information on the most up-to-date results of our research project:

“Longer life cycles for returnable PET bottles by preventing flavor migration.”

The event addresses beverage bottlers, packaging technologists as well as potentially interested parties who deal with R&D questions in the field of returnable PET.

Conference language: english

Practically no other materials have as much recycling potential as thermoplastics. Companies who place plastic products like these on the market therefore have a particular responsibility to keep plastics in the recycling loop.

Compared to non-returnable PET and returnable glass bottles, returnable PET bottles show a notedly positive ecobalance in regional sales as they are low in weight and can be refilled. However, owing to flavor migration from the product to the PET wall and vice versa, for some beverages the number of bottle refilling cycles is limited.

To date, multiple filling has also restricted the sensory and optical life of filled returnable PET products. To master this challenge, KHS and a team from special research division SFB-TR 87 at RWTH Aachen University and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) have joined forces.

At our forum we shall reveal the current intermediate status pertaining to the following topics:

  • Long-term stability of returnable PET coating
  • Avoidance of PET corrosion
  • Prevention of flavor migration
  • Increase in the number of refills

And finally, our Returnable PET Forum shall provide science and industry with an exciting opportunity to make contacts and openly exchange ideas. We look forward to seeing you!
